Put SimTether on the phone that holds the SIM

One app on the Android phone you are leaving behind. It forwards what its SIMs receive to the device you carry.

Android

The forwarder

It runs on the phone with the SIM in it. Install it there, not on the phone you carry.

Reading this on a computer? Point the Android phone at the code.

Cartoon: Dave steps out of his front door with a suitcase while his old phone stays behind on the hall table, plugged in and glowing.

Install it on the Android phone that holds the SIM you want to read. It takes the SMS role on that phone, forwards every message it receives, and puts your replies back on the same card.

Download for Android

Android 8.0 or later. About 0.9 MB. Signed by us, and it asks for no account.

It is under review on Google Play. Until it is listed there, this file is how it is installed.

Setting it up

Four steps on the Android phone

From the download to a paired device. It takes a couple of minutes and no account.

1

Install it

Open the file on the phone. Android asks whether your browser may install apps — that question is what installing from outside a store looks like, and you can turn the permission back off afterwards.

2

Give it the SMS role

Android only hands the messages of a SIM to the app holding the SMS role. SimTether asks for it on first run, and asks for nothing else it does not need — there is no account, and it never reads your contacts.

3

Leave it plugged in

The phone stays where the SIM has coverage, on power, on Wi-Fi. It checks in every sixty seconds; a phone that stops is reported as one that went quiet.

4

Pair the device you carry

Tap Pair a device. The phone shows a code that is good for two minutes and once only; scanning it is what enrols the device that reads these SIMs, and the only way in.

iPhone and iPad

In its first review

SimTether has only just been released. The half you carry is written and working, and it is in the queue every new app goes through.

Coming soon

A brand-new app, in Apple's review queue

Every app reaching the App Store for the first time is reviewed by Apple before anyone can install it, and this one is new enough to still be in that queue. Approval can come any day, so it is worth searching the App Store for SimTether; the link goes here the same day. Install the Android half now and pair it when the app lands.

Android is where a SIM can be read

Only Android lets an app hold the SMS role and read what a SIM receives, which is why the forwarder is an Android app and not an iPhone one. The phone you carry can be anything, once the app for it exists.

Occasional updates

One short email when there is something real to say, such as the app reaching the App Store. Nothing else.

SimTether is software for reaching your own messages. It is not an operator, it does not issue numbers, and it does not port anything.
